The First Trust Deed

The Worcestershire County Archive contains a book which has copies of the Trust Deeds of Methodist Societies in the Redditch Circuit.  Studley’s is dated 26th August 1808, when it was part of Bromsgrove Circuit.  19 Trustees are listed, starting with John Bennett, needlemaker, Thos. Blundell, needlemaker, John Chatterley, joiner, William Shayler, gardener and William Davies, labourer, all of Studley.

An Indenture between John Hill of Great Coughton, wheelwright, and the Trustees records the sale of a plot of land of length 12½ yards and width 10 yards 6 inches or thereabouts for the sum of 10 shillings “for the purpose of erecting a Chapel or place of religious worship”.

The Trustees were given power to raise up to £150 for completing, repairing, or enlarging the Chapel.

New Trustees were nominated to replace those who had died in an amendment to the Deed dated 16th April 1833. The records contain several subsequent Deeds up to 1967, recording those who had died or wished to be relieved of their duties, together with their replacements.

There is limited parking available on the road outside the Church.  There is a public car park in Pool Road; a footpath leads behind Studley Infants School to the road nearly opposite the Church.

What should I expect when I visit the church?

You will receive a very warm welcome, particularly from the Door Steward, who will be able to answer your questions and direct you to where you need to go.
Each service is different, but will normally include hymn singing, bible reading, prayers and a sermon.
An offering for the work of the Church and the wider Methodist Circuit is usually taken.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are served after the service where there is plenty of time to meet new people and ask more questions.

What happens to the children at church?

Although we get few children visiting, we will provide activities suitable for the children's age.

Is there a dress code?

No! Please just be yourself and come dressed in your 'normal' clothes.

Will I have to join in?

Not at all!
You are free to simply observe or participate as much as feels comfortable for you.

I have more questions, how can I get in touch and ask them.
